With her mother by her side, an emotional Harriet Wran walked free from jail after two years for her role in the stabbing murder of an ice dealer.
Nearing tears, Harriet approached waiting media to explain to them she was still recovering and hoped for privacy.
“I really have just come to implore you to understand that I am still very much in recovery,” she said.
“It’s going to be a long process and it’s going to be hard and I ask you to understand please let me do what I have to do in private.”
Harriet’s mother Jill Hickson Wran put her hands on her daughter’s shoulders and stroked her hair as she spoke to reporters.

She then kissed her on the forehead like a little girl as they walked towards a car to go home after leaving Silverwater women’s jail.

Harriet will live with her mother in Sydney

The 28-year-old, who became eligible for parole last Friday after a meeting of the parole board, will live with her mother in Sydney’s eastern suburb of Woollahra.
She was in custody for more than two years, after being arrested in August 2014 for the murder of Redfern drug dealer Daniel McNulty.
Harriet, the daughter of the late former NSW premier Neville Wran, was sentenced in July this year, but was eligible for early release since August 12 because of the time already served.
Harriet’s mother has shown public support for her daughter throughout the court hearings.
Jill attended court for her daughter’s plea and sentencing and told media “I couldn’t love her more.”
In a phone call from prison Harriet begged her mum to forget about her, after fearing she had brought shame to the well-known family.
But Jill cut her off to tell her ‘no’ and that she loved her.

Part of Harriet’s release conditions include abstaining from alcohol and drugs as well as psychiatric treatment.

The murder shocked Harriet

In July, Harriet pleaded guilty to charges of accessory after the fact of murder and robbery in company, with prosecutors dropping the murder offence.
Harriet said she knocked on the door of Daniel’s housing commission apartment while her then boyfriend Michael Lee and a man she’d only just met, Lloyd Edward Haines, stood out of view to the side.
Once the door was opened, Lloyd and Michael robbed Daniel of ice and stabbed him to death, his roommate was also injured.
Harriet told the sentencing hearing she couldn’t believe she was involved in an incident where someone died, according to news.com.au.

“I can’t believe someone died and someone was so badly injured,” she said. “I regret every step I took that night.”
Harriet also admitted she believed her arrest saved her from death.
“I never felt like I did when I was using ice… There was a chemical high I didn’t know existed and I knew my brain was never going to forget that,” she said.
“I think I would have killed myself through using drugs.”
Lloyd and Michael have both pleaded guilty to murder and will be sentenced on September 29.
