AUSTRALIA, we’ve done it again.
Forget Tuscany, forget Bordeaux, forget even the Marlborough Region in New Zealand because Australia is sweeping the wine awards again, and it’s not even going to cost you that much.
The global ranking of the world’s best wines and wineries is published annually by the World Association of Wine Writers and Journalists (WAWWJ) and incorporates more than 50,000 producers and 700,930 wines across the top 80 international wine competitions from around the world.
The list looks at how many awards the wine or winery has received throughout the year and then, because they haven’t already received enough, gives them one last award for getting the most awards.
And turns out, the world’s most awarded wine is an Australian one — the 2014 Jaraman Shiraz from Taylors Wines — and all it costs is $30.

The 2017 report, called the World Ranking of Wines and Spirits, also named Wolf Blass, Jacob’s Creek, McGuigan and Taylors Wines in the top 20 most awarded wineries globally.
International President of the WAWWJ Leonardo Castellani noted the performance of Australian wineries in this year’s ranking.
“The broader Australian presence is significant this year, with 21 Australian wines on the list of the top 100 wines in the world and a ranking of 5th on the list of most awarded countries,” he said.
And while we might be sweeping the board once again, this definitely isn’t the first time Australian wines have been awarded on an international scale.
In July, an Aldi wine won big at the Melbourne International Wine competition — a bottle that only costs $6.99.
The One Road South Australian Heathcote Shiraz 2015 won Wine Of The Year in the Best Value Shiraz category.

Another Aldi wine, the One Road Coonawarra cabernet Merlot 2015, $6.99, also took out a bunch of awards at the competition.

A red wine sold exclusively by Coles, the St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon, also earned a coveted “double gold” medal during a blind tasting at the Melbourne International Wine Competition.

The best part — it was a breezy $6.

This also isn’t the first time that Coles outperformed other labels with a price savvy wine.
Just last year the company took home the title of best wine under $20 from Australia and New Zealand at the Winestate Wine of the Year Awards, with their $5 James Busby Big & Bold Shiraz 2015.
It seems to be a growing trend that discount bottles of wine, which once upon a time would never have been able to compete with the more expensive labels, are now being recognised and winning numerous awards.
