I have not met him in real life, yet he remains to be my powerful inspiration. His name is Nick Vujicic, a Christian preacher and an international motivational speaker.
I can never forget the impression he left on me when I first saw him in one of his DVDs. The image of a man with no arms and legs stunned me. He rolled down from his bed, walked with difficulty using his little feet that were attached directly to his trunk. I felt my heart wrenched as I watched him trying to brush his teeth and shave himself.
I know there are millions of handicapped people around the world, and I had felt sorry every time I encountered such an unfortunate fate. However, never before had I felt so much admiration for a person like Nick. Living independently despite his disability is admirable enough, but he is even greater than that! He lives to inspire the world. He has travelled to various countries, encouraging people to dream big and to never give up. With no limbs, he has built his own house, established his own business and changed many people’s lives. I started to question myself: with fully functioning arms and legs, why should I not trust myself in doing whatever I want?
It was not until after I watched Nick that I started to enjoy reading motivational books or sayings such as "Will you look back on life and say, "I wish I had," or "I'm glad I did"?". Day by day, I become more attentive to the inner me – my values and what I want to achieve in this life that I fortunately have. The more I ponder over this, the more I want to pursue my career as a scientist. I would love to research about how human bodies work, how to diagnose and heal debilitating diseases, thereby improving the quality of life for people like Nick. That’s why I chose biomedical science.
I also chose Bachelor of Commerce as financial skills are essential in this modern world. More importantly, I believe that I can succeed in this course, because of my genuine interest in Maths and because I can comfortably communicate with different people – a skill I’ve gained from my casual job.
Bond university struck my interest at first because of the generous scholarship program which treats Australian and international students at Australian High Schools unbiasedly. As I learned more about Bond, I became excited about the fast-tracked degrees, which do not seem to compromise the competency of new graduates. I have always enjoyed the fast-paced and effective working style, and this is exactly what Bond uniquely offers.
My overall impression about Bond is a close knit of community, where I can socialise closely with other university students while having good opportunities to get support from my professors. That means I will have a fantastic university life if I could enter Bond’s community.
