If your double garage is full of junk, take on a challenge and try decluttering so you can reclaim the space and use the garage for both a car and perhaps a work area, art studio or office!

The simple and affordable option could be a DIY shelving system, perhaps? There are some wonderful options available at Bunnings that won't cost you an arm and a leg. Take for example this double garage of 5520mm deep and 5600mm wide, with enough space to subdivide.

Remember: if something costs more to store than it's worth, get rid of it!

1. Clear everything out
Start by removing everything out of the space you're about to work on. By getting a lay of the land, you can evaluate what sized shelving will work best for a project like this.

2. Subdividing is a good idea.
A double garage offers a lot of space that you can capitalise on easily by installing a shelving unit. Ones made from MDF are easier put together and can range from around $89 and up from Bunnings

3. Select deep shelving units
The framing here allows you to store much of what ends up in the garage. For example, there's 4.1 x 2.1m of storage here.

4. Lay vinyl tiles
Reinforce the new office's status as a bona fide living space by covering the bare concrete with proper flooring. Putting down vinyl tiles is a fast, easy and inexpensive option, and some of the faux slate and parquet finishes available look fantastic. So it ticks all the boxes, and if you go for self-adhesive tiles, you really can transform the floor in a matter of minutes.

5. Don't forget about decorate and functional shelving units!
Wrought iron lacework was popularised in the early 19th century as decorative trim on residential homes. If you're lucky enough to have a few corner bits stashed away, try repurposing them as decorative shelf brackets, or some of these options from Bunnings will do nicely.

6. Try repurposing a bookshelf unit!
Give a pair of bookshelves a more practical purpose by butting a couple together and  offering equally measured or staggered shelving to accommodate for a range of different items.
