HOMEMADE: DIY...

DIY: Dry Shampoo Spray.

Dry shampoo.
Have you tried it?
Its what you use when you need to wash your hair
yet don't have time to take a shower.
I think everyone has encountered this dilemma once or twice.

Today, I'm going to teach you my rendition
with 3 simple ingredients you should already have.
If you don't, then they can be found in any grocery store.

This recipe came to my mind a couple days ago
when I realized my hair needed a spruce up,
yet I didn't have the time for an actual hair washing.
It felt like a AHA! moment, as a little light bulb turned on in my head.

I have to say that this Dry Shampoo isn't dry at all.
But like the name says, it's a spray.
I kept the dry part in because its a familiar name/product
and it gives the same results.
What you need:

·       1 tbsp of cornstarch
·       4 tbsp of water
·       1 tbsp of rubbing alcohol
( I used ethyl, found it at Wallgreens) small measuring glass, cup, bowl...whatever.
·       a small spray bottle (shown in first picture)

Mix it all together, pour it into your spray bottle and shake it up!

To Use:
Spray in on your scalp, in your hair and anywhere the your hair needs to be de-greased.
You do not need to drench your scalp, just dampen it up.

Side note:
cover or close your eyes, alcohol in eyes is not fun.
Also, if you don't like to the use of alcohol in your hair products
(i.e. hairspray) then this D.I.Y might not be for you.

·       Run a comb or your fingers through your hair to distribute it evenly.
·       Let it air dry or quickly blast your scalp with a hair dryer, which is my favorite method.
We are going for speed here.
·       Repeat if necessary.

All done.
Rejoice!
you can go another day without washing your hair,
and no one will notice.
Why it works,

Both alcohol and cornstarch are de-greasers.
Cornstarch does not dissolve fast so you will notice
that after the water has evaporated the cornstarch will still remain.
Pretty neat, huh!
I hope you like this.
Let me know how this worked out for you.

After-thought:
I only recommend using this at max once a week.
You know, for the day you really should've taken a shower but didn't.
We've all been there.
I'm also working on a couple of different versions of
that don't include the alcohol, so stay tuned, or come back again.

Shampooless:
Baking Soda Hair Cleansing Mud
+ Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

I had been reading about going "no poo" for a while on a Traditional Foods forum...
About a month ago, I decided to to take the plunge!
I was a little skeptical, but now 4 weeks later - I'm a believer!
So the alternative I'm using consists of Baking Soda
a couple drops of Essential Oils
and the very important Apple Cider Vinegar for the rinse.
I had been told to expect that hair may be a little more oily at first,
while it's adjusting to the change.
I found the first couple of times a little discouraging and overrated,
but I thought I would press through.
Within a week and a half, my hair was lovelier than most shampoos
and conditioners have ever left it.

So how do you wash your hair with baking soda?

Baking Soda Hair Cleansing Mud
Mix 1 Heaping Tbsp. of Baking Soda,
3-5 drops of essential oils of your choice
(Lavender, patchouli, rosemary, sweet orange is some of mine:
not necessarily all together),
Water to make a paste.
Mix this in the shower.

I keep a container of baking soda

and one of apple cider vinegar in the shower.
After making the cleansing mud,
I scrub my entire scalp, starting at the hairline
and then filling in the circle...
sometimes I need to make a little more.
Rinse that all out...: fragrant:

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse
Pour 1-2 Tbsp (really just a splash or 2) of apple cider vinegar
in to an approx. 2 C. size container
and then dilute,
with shower water to fill cup.

Try to not get this into your eyes, because that doesn't feel too great.

Gently pour it over your locks,
and run your vinegar liquid coated fingers over your scalp as well...rinse and Voila!
Yes, it is slightly more time consuming....
but it seems to me that all things that are more natural
and holistic take a little more effort!

HEY SUGAR LIPS January 7, 2011

Winter has your lips cracking’ like the Sahara?
And lipstick just highlights those cracks! Ew!
All you’ll need is
  1. 1 tsp of coconut oil,
  2. 1 tsp of raw honey,
  3. 1.5 – 2 TB of raw/granulated sugar mixed, and
  4. a dash of lemon juice.
Don’t worry if you happen to taste it –
it’s absolutely DELISH!
Mix these ingredients together to make a sugary paste.
Use a soft bristle toothbrush or finger to dippy-dip into the scrub.
Use soft circular motions across your lips.
Rinse with water
and apply your favourite lip balm afterwards for soft n’ silky lips.
Now tell me those aren’t begging’ to be kissed!
WHY THE CHOICE OF INGREDIENTS?
{Here’s your sci lab lesson for the day…}
Coconut Oil =
vit E & K, polyphenols are anti aging,
& fatty acids that moisturize w/o breakouts
Raw Honey =
natural antibacterial, amino acids that moisturize.
Raw is better bc it hasn’t lost it’s healing properties.
Raw Sugar = produces glycolic acid/alpha hydroxy
which exfoliates & stimulates collagen production –
anti aging.
Lemon Juice =
vit C & citric acid brighten skin, scars,
and exfoliates.
PSST!!!
Use left overs for an entire facial scrub!

[sound the fire alarm!!!]
WARNING: rub at your own risk –
I don’t want to get blasted with DIY gone wrong photos
bc you went scrub happy.
Avoid sun exposure bc of the natural acids in the mask.
Any leftovers should be stored in the fridge.
this is an original recipe & photos –
pls link back to this post if you use on your blog.
