HOW (PART OF) CHRISTCHURCH CYCLES

PRELIMINARY FINDINGS FROM THE CYCLEWAYS PROJECT SURVEY

Christchurch is located on the south island of New Zealand in the Canterbury region. A series of earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 shook the area and caused massive damage to the city's infrastructure. As of 2015, the city is still rebuilding. Part of this rebuild is diversifying modes of transportation for people to get around the city.

City council is currently prioritising the development of 13 new cycleways that will connect different parts of the Canterbury region to Christchurch's Central Business District.

SensingCity's CycleWays Project aims to improve the availability of data regarding cycling routes, road-user behavior and cycling infrastructure in Christchurch. This data may be used to support decision making on a number of levels, allowing cyclists to choose their optimal cycle route to work, allowing commuters to make more informed decisions around modal choice and providing a solid base of evidence for city officials regarding planning of city infrastructure and cyclist safety.
